What a Lesson Looks Like
Every student's plan is different, but here's the general flow of what a typical lesson looks like, and what you'll get between them.
Check-In
How did practice go? What clicked, what didn't? What do you want to focus on today? No quiz, just a conversation.
Technique & Theory
A short, focused exercise on whatever skill we're building, picking accuracy, a new scale, a tricky chord change.
Songs & Application
The fun part. We work through a song you actually want to play, applying what we just drilled. Real music, every week.
Plan the Week
I send you a clear practice plan, what to work on, for how long, and which video/audio resources go with it.
// Between Lessons
You'll get access to the lesson management app where I drop video demos of exactly what we covered, audio backing tracks for the songs we're working on, sheet music or tabs in PDF, and a structured practice plan you can check off through the week.
You can message me with questions any time. If something's not clicking on Tuesday, you don't have to wait until next Saturday's lesson to ask.
// In-Person Lessons
In-Person Lessons in Suwanee
I teach in person in Suwanee, convenient to Sugar Hill, Buford, Duluth, John's Creek, Lawrenceville, and Cumming. Easy parking, dedicated lesson space, no waiting in a music-store showroom.
If you're in Gwinnett County or northern Fulton, in-person is usually the better experience, especially for younger students or absolute beginners. There's no substitute for being able to watch your hands and adjust on the spot.
// Online Lessons
Online Lessons Anywhere
Online students get the same plan, the same materials, and the same teacher, just over video. Works great for students outside the Atlanta area, busy adults whose schedules can't handle the drive, traveling families, and college students home for breaks.
Some students do a hybrid, in-person most weeks, online when life gets busy. Totally fine, totally normal.
What You'll Need Before Lesson One
Don't go gear shopping before our first lesson. Seriously, wait. A lot of beginners buy the wrong setup based on bad internet advice. Better to have a 15-minute conversation first.
That said, here's what you'll generally need to get started:
An Instrument
Any reasonable acoustic, electric, bass, or ukulele works to start. If you're buying one, ask me first, I'll send a few specific recommendations at your budget. No need to spend big.
A Tuner
A clip-on tuner ($15–$20) or a free tuner app on your phone. Playing in tune is non-negotiable, even from lesson one.
Picks & a Strap
A pack of medium picks (.73mm is a great starting point) and a strap if you're playing standing up. Total cost: about $10.
A Small Amp & Cable
For electric guitar/bass: any small practice amp (10–20 watts is plenty) and a quarter-inch cable. Headphone amps are a great option if neighbors are a concern.
Webcam & Mic
For online lessons: a laptop with a built-in camera works fine to start. We can upgrade your setup later if you stick with it. Decent internet matters more than pro audio gear.
Patience & 15 Minutes a Day
Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours on Sunday. Consistency is what actually moves students forward.
